Matrioshka  first appeared in 1899 in the city of Sergiev Posad near Moscow and now are very popular throughout Russia and in another countries of the world.

The word "matrioshka" refers primarily to the mother of the familly. Moreover matryoshka symbolizes fertility and the people as the whole community. These nesting dolls are sometimes called Matushka, Matreshka,Babushka dolls or Matryoshka.

Matrioshka is made of linden wood,which has unique qualities like: strength, lightness and flexibility.

Initially, Matrioshkas were toys for children. Children like a lot to play with them and discover inside of each matrioshka : dad, mom, uncle, aunt, grandmother and grandfather. It allowed children to learn the basic calculations , from 3 to 30. 

Matryoshka dolls are often designed to follow a particular theme, for instance pleasant girls in traditional dress, but the theme can be anything, from fairy tale characters to Soviet leaders.

Today modern artists create many new styles of nesting dolls. Common themes include animal collection, portraits and caricatires of famous politicians, musicians and popular movie stars.
